The Balearic Government cabinet meeting, in an extraordinary meeting,
agreed on Monday July 24 to
authorise the insular councils of Mallorca,
Menorca and Ibiza & Formentera to formulate a temporary territorial
norm, prior to the respective territorial planning plans that the said
public institutions must approve.
The Balearic president, Francesc Antich, has decided, therefore, to
accept the petitions from the councils of Menorca and of Ibiza and
Formentera to control the galloping urban growth that is endangering the
balance of the islands, and to pass the buck to the Mallorcan Council,
for it to decide itself, which are the steps that should be applied on
the island to stop the barbaric urban growth that continues still one
year after the signing of the Progress Pact.
The Mallorcan Council, governed by UM and PSM, are holding the position
of not approving a moratorium until the end of the year, although some
sources indicate that an urban moratorium for Mallorca could be proposed
at the extraordinary full meeting to be held next Thursday.
Nationalist sources, not directly connected to UM and PSM, coincide in
pointing out that although UM's ambiguity in connection to urban and
environmental topics is well known, they are surprised by the lack of
initiative from PSM in respect to these vital topics for the future of
Mallorca.
