Spain is the fourth country to legalise homosexual marriages.
The law that permits homosexual marriage is now up and running, since the day after its publication in the BOE (state white paper) of July 2. The law modifies the Civil Code relating to the right to marriage, allowing this to be celebrated between people of the same sex, with complete equality of rights and obligations. The equivalence of rights means that homosexual married couples will be able to adopt children and receive social benefits foreseen for heterosexual couples.
With the entrance of this law, which was passed by majority vote last Thursday in the Spanish Parliament with the opposition of the Partido Popular M.P.s Spain becomes the fourth country in the the world to permit marriage links between people of the same sex, after Belgium, Holland and Canada. .
