Extraordinary flowering of the oceanic posidonia

Extraordinary flowering of the oceanic posidonia
A recent study by IMEDEA researches Elena Díaz and Carlos Duarte has detected that the fields of oceanic posidonia exhibit this Autumn an important and abnormal flowering in the waters of the Balearic Islands, with a density of over 400 flowers per square metre. According to the study, "the flowering of this marine higher plant is infrequent and the density and extension of flower production taking place in the waters of the Balearic Islands is the highest ever reported". The study suggests that the exuberant flowering can be a response to the stress caused by the high temperatures this summer. Duarte and Díaz belive that "this flowering is just another symptom of global warming".
