The fiestas for Santa Maria, known also as the "Festes de la Terra",
start today in Formentera. This celebration, that commemorates the Catalan
conquest of Eivissa and Formentera in 1235, has a particularly popular
character, with festive proposals that pay special attention to their own
culture and traditions. Music in Catalan, dancing and sandal workshops,
traditional games, poetry and conferences are some of the suggestions.
As usual, the fiestas include the Fotomarató "Santa Maria", that
this year is the ninth edition.
The first concert will take place on Monday night in the Plaza de Sant
Francesc. The Barcelona groups
Siamb,
Andreu i Els Rumberos and
Dusminguet
will perform.
On Tuesday, on Santa Maria's day, amongst other proposals there will
be the Correllengua, (procession in favour of Catalan) that will start
at 6 p.m. from the different towers on the island and end at 8 p.m. at
the roundabout of Sant Francesc. Afterwards, in the Plaza de Sant Francesc,
the groups
Quico el
Célio, el Noi i el Mut de Ferreries from Tortosa, Bèsties
Xeremies from Mallorca and
Pota Lait
de Eivisssa will perform.
