The
Balearic Government, in the Cabinet
Meeting last Friday, passed a draught law to cancel the Tax on the stays
in tourist firms, known popularly as
the
ecotax, that has been in force since May 2002 taxing people's overnight
stays in tourist firms with an amount that oscillated between 0.25 and
2 euros depending on the type and chategory of establishment.
The statement for the motives for this draught law considers that
"throughout the last few years the so called residential tourism has increased
notably as opposed to the traditional tourist, a reason for which it is
thought that the imposition of a charge only for people who stay in these
establishments does not represent the most adequate way of defining a tax
destined to financing infrastructure and policies relating to the environment
and tourist activity."
According to the Balearic Government, the
Parlament
de les Illes Balears will not be able to pass the law until the end
of October, so that the tax will continue to be in force during this summer
season in all the hotels of the Balearics.
