What happens to someone from Formentera who is interested in obtaining
an ADSL line? Well he has to put up with not getting one, as can
be seen on
this
web of the
Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología
with information on if your telephone number can access this service. Formentera
is the only Balearic island where there is no coverage for ADSL technology
(although the other islands also have users without this service).
This makes ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) the only option available
for those who wish to improve on 56 kilobytes per second (kbps) of a normal
modem.
But ISDN has download speed limitations. The maximum obtainable is 128
kbps, while ADSL can reach levels of 128 to 2 megas per second (depending
on the price that one is prepared to pay). The fact that from the island
access to this service of wide band of Internet promoted by Telefónica
is not available has upset the cybernaut community of Formentera. The scarce
market is one of the arguments given for not setting up this service. ADSL
uses existing cables and only needs adaptations in the telephone exchanges.
For more information on ADSL you can consult
this
section of the web of the
Asociación
de Internautas.
