The financial entity, "Sa Nostra", has presented their "Informe Econòmic
i Social de les Illes Balears 2001". This is the 34th edition of the report
that until last year was the responsibility of Gabinete de Estudios Económicos
y Sociales of "Sa Nostra", directed by the economist Miquel Alenyà,
and that as from now is prepared by the Centre de Recerca Econòmica
(
CRE),
an organism created by "
Sa Nostra"
and the Balearic University (
UIB) directed
by
Antoni
Riera, head professor of the
Departamento
de Economía y Empresa of the UIB.
The most outstanding details of the report are:
The Gross National Product (GNP) of the Balearics in 2001 reached 16,520
million euros, with an increase of 2.5% over 2000.
The evolution of productivity in the Balearics experienced negative
rates since 1998, above all in the building industry.
Menorca had a growth of 3.5%, Eivissa and Formentera of 3% and Mallorca
slightly under 2,5%.
The services sector, with over 13,300 million euros, was the one that
supplied most to the Balearic GNP.
The international tourism that came via air, was reduced by some 2%
while that from Spain increased by 1%.
Consumption had an average increase of 2% as against 4.4% in 2000.
The Available Gross Family Income for homes in the Balearics increased
by 3.74% when in 2000 it did so by 5.21%.
The percentage of the family income destined to financing homes in the
Balearics reached 68.6%.
The people with Social Security coverage increased by 3.9%.
Balearics has become the third autonomous community with the highest
increase in density of population.
The Balearics is a community with greater percentage of abandoning of
studies.
