The association Amigos de la Biblioteca Internacional de Formentera
has organised a cycle "Por la recuperación de la memoria histórica"
dedicated to the Spanish Civil War.
According to Pedro Martín Matilla, president of the organising
association, the cycle has the objective of promoting debate and reflection
about the Spanish civil war, cutting the shameful silence encouraged by
all the supposedly democratic institutions of our country about the most
important page of our contemporary history.
The programmed events will start on Monday, April 8 with a talk "The
conspiracy of silence after the death of Franco", that will have the presence
of Marcelo Usabiaga, member of the Spanish maquis and of the French resistance
to fascism and prisoner in various concentration camps in Spain and in
Mathausen (Germany).
The cycle will continue with the projection of three films and a documentary.
On Tuesday 9, "La Caza" by Carlos Saura, on Wednesday 10 "Bienvenido Mister
Marshall" by Luis García Berlanga, on Thursday 11, "Pascual
Duarte" by Ricardo Franco, and on Friday 12, "Muerte en el valle", documentary
about a member of the International Brigades carried out by his daughter,
who went to all the places where her father had been until he lost his
life in the Valley of Aragón.
Both the opening talk and the four projections will take place at 8.30
p.m. in the association's headquarters in the classroom No. 8 of the old
Institut de Sant Francesc Xavier on Formentera.
The programmed events will end on Sunday 14, at 2 p.m. at the old Concentration
Camp la Savina, with a "Homenaje a la II República española
y a quienes dieron la libertad y en ocasiones la vida en defensa de sus
ideales", followed by a popular lunch in which each person will take some
food to share.
