Posidonia sea-grasses, World Heritage Site

Posidonia sea-grasses, World Heritage Site
After the exhibition by the artist Enric Riera, that can be visited until April 22, the Sala de Cultura Sa Nostra in Formentera will hold, as from April 24, the exhibition "Les praderies de posidōnia, patrimoni de tots", that synthesizes the importance of the posidonia fields in the marine ecosystem, the impacts that threaten it and the perspectives for its conservation

According to the organisers, that will be open until May 13 2002, "the ocean investigation has demonstrated in the latest years, that the posidonia has an enormous importance for the health of the marine environment, but that this ecosystem is threatened by the intensive use of the coast. The waste that contaminates the water, the building of quays, and ports that change the maritime currents and alter the dynamics of the coast, the massive extraction of sand from the seabed, the repeated anchoring of numerous boats over the same area, the dredge fishing, the introduction of exotic species such as the Caulerpa taxifolia... are some of the causes of destruction of the posidonia".
