Cultural tourism: culture through and for development
In recent years tourism
has become a complex phenomenon of unprecedented proportions, which can
be either an opportunity or a threat with regard to culture, depending
on how tourism is managed. UNESCO’s objective is to help Member States
to devise strategies for the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage,
for better promotion and knowledge of the cultural heritage among national
and international tourists and for constructive intercultural exchanges
between the local population and travellers, thereby contributing to economic,
social and cultural development.
