Regulation of compulsory education in the Balearics

The Balearic Cabinet approved on Friday, as proposed by the local Ministry for Education and Culture, the Decree for the general control of compulsory infants', primary and secondary education.

The new decree establishes the basic rules for education and the objectives for education on the Islands, respecting the peculiarities for this community in connection to educational matters.

The approval of the new norm is caused by the assumption for educational regulation by the Balearic Autonomous Community, and this was approved in agreement to article 15.1 of the Autonomous Statutes for the Balearics and article 27 in the Constitution.

The decree establishes that Catalan, particular to the Balearics, is the language for use in teaching.

The new norm establishes that the Balearic Government will define the curriculum and educational contents that should be followed in compulsory infants', primary and secondary education.

The Cabinet also approved, amongst other things, as proposed by the Presidency Ministry, the creation of the Official college of Physiotherapists of the Balearics; and as proposed by the Welfare Department, the Committee for Cooperation for the Development of the Balearics.
