This week the fourth meeting of the work group
Europarc-Espaņa took
place in Escorca (Mallorca). This entity is in charge of compiling a
Plan of
Action for protected natural areas of Spain. The meeting, organised by
the General Direction for Biodiversity of the Environment Department of
the Balearic Government, continued until Friday, with the participation
of all the people responsible for Europarc, the Balearic government
experts and representatives of parks in other autonomous communities.
The Plan of Action is a reference document with the desire of recording
a shared vision on the part to be played by protected areas in the society
of the XXI century. The Plan will be presented in the World Park
Congress that will take place in South Africa in September , 2002.
In Spain there are some 600 protected natural areas that cover 3.2
million hectares, a little over 6% of the territory. Europarc-Espaņa,
the Spanish section of the Federation of Natural and National Parks of
Europe (
Europarc), gathers together the majority of entities involved in
the planning and administration of these areas.
