The Balearic Government and businesspeople want to administer the Islands' airports

The vicepresident of the Balearic Government, and Councillor for Economy, Commerce and Industry, Pere Sampol, and the Councillor for Inland Revenue and Budgets, Joan Mesquida, have met this morning with representatives of the businesses of the Islands to sign a proposal for the administration model for the Balearic airports, that they will pass on to the central Spanish government.

The government in Madrid intends to privatise en block the company AENA that controls all the Spanish airports at present. Although the privatisation plan has not been finalised, the Balearic Government and businesspeople are worried about the possibility that the airports of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza could be become controlled by a business entity that may not bear in mind the social, economic and territorial interests of the Balearics.

The joint proposal of the Balearic Government and Businesses suggests the transformation of AENA into a holding company, but demands the creation of a public-private Balearic consortium to administer the three airports of the Islands.
