Last Friday, June 30, the Balearic Gay and Lesbian Group,
Ben Amics,
organised the "Gala Orgull Gai 2000" (Pride Gay Gala) at the
Teatre
Principal. During the gala the annual Pink Siurell and Devil were given
by Ben Amics.
The Pink Siurell is awarded to those people, entities or institution who
have excelled in their struggle for the freedom of people and for
equality for homosexuals. In contrast, the Pink Devil is given to
those people, entities or institutions who have stood out for favouring
homophobic behaviours and being against freedom of the people.
In this VI edition, the Pink Siurell was awarded to the Sindicato de
Excluidos of Mallorca, for having created a section for homosexuals and
the Pink Devil went to the family delegate of the Mallorca Diocese,
Manuel Sirer, for asking the members of the Balearic parliament to vote
against the law of common law partners.
The others nominated for the Pink Siurell 2000 were TVE, for their
openly tolerant programmes, and the Parliamentary Group Esquerra Unida i
Ecologista (United Left and Ecologists) for the presentation of a Draft
Bill Proposal on the rights of transsexual people.
As for those nominated for the Pink Devil, the list included the
hotelier, Gabriel Escarrer, for moffing the proposal presented by EU i
Verds about the sex change operations, and Agustí Buades of Acción
Familiar, for trying to prevent at all cost the adoption of children by
homosexual partners.
