Negroponte will present a $100 laptop machine.
During the second stage of the World Summit on the Information Society, that will take place in Tunisia, from November 16 to 18, the Media Lab's Professor Nicholas Negroponte, accompanied by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will present a $100 laptop machine, which will serve as the cornerstone of the One Laptop Per Child global development initiative.
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, full-colour, full-screen laptop that will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. This rugged laptop will be WiFi-enabled and have USB ports galore. Its current specifications are: 500MHz, 1GB, 1 Megapixel.
The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives.
