World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day
The General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993 declared 3 May as World Press Freedom Day. That date commemorates the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press, adopted on 3 May 1991. This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Declaration, which affirms that a free press is essential to the existence of democracy and a fundamental human goal.

More information about the Day can be found on the webs of the United Nations, the Unesco, Reporters without Borders and World Association of Newspapers.
