Natural Park of Ses Salines in Eivissa and Formentera

Natural Park of Ses Salines in Eivissa and Formentera
The Balearic Government, in the cabinet meeting approved last Friday, August 3, the Draft Law for environment protection of Ses Salines in Eivissa and Formentera, and the passing to the Balearic Parliament.

The new law declares the creation of the Park, called "Parc Natural de ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera", with an area of some 2.500 hectares of land and salt ponds with some 50 km2 of marine areas comprised in the municipalities of  Sant Josep de sa Talaia on the island of Eivissa and the island of Formentera, and their interior waters.

Ses Salines in Eivissa and Formentera are protected at present by the National Law of 1995 that declared them a Natural Reserve. According to the Councillor for Environment, Margalida Rosselló, "this protection, as with the autonomous Law for Natural Areas, is only a protection on paper, a concept that is only applied to those protected areas that do not have any development planned nor an effective administration with a view to obtain the objectives of conservation that the creation norm seeks."
