The holidays online: Emails and e-greetings outpace e-commerce

More than twice as many people used the Internet to message friends and relatives during the holiday season than to buy gifts, according to a recent survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

The survey found 53% of Internet users sent emails during the holiday season to relatives and friends to discuss the holidays or to make plans, 32% sent e-greeting cards to loved ones and friends, 24% went to the Web to get information on crafts and recipes, and to get other ideas for holiday celebrations and 14% researched religious information and traditions online. In comparison, only 24% of Internet users purchased gifts online.
