"Tribuna de la Mediterrānia" is the discussion forum on Internet created by the
University of the Balearics and the newspaper
El
Mundo / El Dia de Baleares with a view to dealting with topics of common interest for the coastal countries of the
Mediterranean basin.
The Mediterranean basin is formed by twenty States with 400 million people. Of these, only four belong to the European
Union, and have a population of approximately 165 million with an average income of 19.000 dollars a year. In contrast, the
235 million remaining inhabitants have to adapt to an average annual income of 1,900 dollars, ten times less.
It is estimated that for the year 2025, that is in another generation, the population of the four European Union states will hardly
increase and will amount to 170 million people, where as the remaining countries will grow by 70 per cent, approaching 400
million people. All this will result in an increase in the difference in standard of life for the inhabitants of some and other
countries.
The coordinator the "Tribuna de la Mediterrānea" is Dr. Federico F. Garau, professor of the UIB.
