According to details given today from the
Councillor for Health and Consume, Aina Salom, because of the celebration of the
World Aids Day on December 1, in the Balearics the tendency is decreasing in the illness since 1996, having registered on June
30, 2000 a total of 1,648 cases, of which 1,311 are on Mallorca, 240 on Ibiza-Formentera, and 86 in Menorca.
Of these 1,648, cases 50,4% (830) correspond to the category of transmission by drug addicts, 22.5% to homosexuals and
16.5% to heterosexuals.
At the press conference in which the details were presented, representatives of the NGOs attended: Escola de Sida de
Balears, ALAS, Ben Amics, Siloé, Consell de Joventut, Cruz Roja Juventud and Metges del Món, organisers of the AIDS
week.
On Friday, an informative marquee "Carpa informativa Día Mundial contra la SIDA" will be installed in the Plaça Major in
Palma.
Meanwhile, the international humanitarian organisation, Médicos sin Fronteras (
MSF), has asked pharmaceutical industries to
fulfil their promise to reduce the prices of medicines against Aids.
