For over a decade, different groups around the world have struggled to create an
Earth Charter that sets forth fundamental ethical
principles for a sustainable existence.
An Earth Charter Commission was formed in 1997 to oversee the project and the drafting of the Charter. The Secretariat for the
Commission is at the Earth Council in Costa Rica. The Commission presented a final version of the Earth Charter after meeting at
the head office of the UNESCO in Paris, between March 12 and 14, 2000.
The objectives of the
International Campaign for the Earth Charter are to promote a worldwide dialogue on shared values and global
ethics; to promote the Earth Charter around the world and to seek endorsement of the Earth Charter by the United Nations General
Assembly by the year 2002.
