The Balearic councillor for Innovation and Energy, Misericordia Ramon,
and the general director for Energy, Joan Perches, have presented the
draught for the
Sectorial Directive Plan for Energy for the Balearics.
The Sectorial Directive Plan for Energy for the Balearics (Energy Plan)
determines the energetic needs for the next 15 years and fixes the
necessary infrastructure to supply this demand and to guarantee the
availability of electricity and other forms of energy such as gas,
petrol, diesel, etc.
The Energy Plan has been created according to the criteria in the
article 58 of the
Law 6/99 for the Territorial Planning Directives of
the Balearics.
Aspects to stress in the Energy Plan:
- It has been decided that the fuel that should absorb the increase in
energy consumption in the next 15 years should be natural gas.
- To transport the gas, the chosen alternative is the natural gas
pipeline to the mainland.
- Mallorca will not be connected to Ibiza via an undersea electric
cable. The gas pipeline will permit the transport of enough natural gas
to Ibiza for the new electricity generator to be carried out with gas
(high production, low environmental impact, etc.).
- In Menorca there is electrical connection with Mallorca and the
natural gas will not come by pipeline, so that an important part of the
electricity consumption increase must be produced in Mallorca by natural
gas and sent to Menorca by undersea link.
- The renewable energies should multiply by 7 their contribution to
energy supply, stressing the incorporation of eolian energy in Menorca
and an important effort to increase the participation of thermic solar
energy and, in a lesser way, photovoltaic.
- No new power centres are proposed for the valid period of the plan.
