The Balearic Government approves the ecotax
The Govern de les Illes Balears approved on Friday, the draft Bill for the creation of the Ecotourist Tax, known popularly as the ecotax. The Government postponed the approval of the tax in the Friday cabinet meeting of the previous week, awaiting the proposals announced by the hoteliers, but the assembly of the Federación Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca did not propose any alternative and once more repeated their complete opposition to the creation of the new tax.

In a posterior press conference of the Cabinet, the president Francesc Antich declared that "the ecotax is one of the most important projects of the Balearic Government and its approval is a cause for satisfaction. It is an innovative norm and many other tourist resorts are already planning to carry out similar initiatives." According to the president, "the ecotax is a mechanism for solidarity amongst tourists and residents, amongst areas of the coast and inland, and respect for the future generations in the preservation of the environment."

The new law will have to be passed by the Parliament and president Antich has shown that he is open to proposals that could improve the new tax in the parliamentary procedures.
