Joan Mayol, the Balearic local minister for Agriculture, resigned on Monday afternoon, and this is the first resignation from the
Cabinet presided by Francesc Antich. The strong differences between the Govern and the Federación Agrícola y Ganadera de
Baleares (FAGB) because of the agricultural policy has caused this resignation.
Joan Mayol has declared that with his resignation he hopes to contribute to the recovery of dialogue as the present situation was
preventing the deep solutions that the sector needs.
The confrontations between the FAGB and the Govern culminated in the tractor march that took place last April 29 and took the
protests and claims from the farmers and breeders before the doors of the Consolat de Mar, centre of the Balearic Govern. Last
Saturday, in Campos, before 3,000 people cited by the FAGB, their president, Fernando Dameto, demanded direct negotiations with
President Antich, refusing any possible understanding with Mayol.
