King
Juan Carlos and Queen
Sofía visited on Wednesday (16/2/2000) The Balearic University (
UIB). This was
the first official visit of the monarchs to the UIB, although the queen had already visited the campus when she participated in the
"Days on Alzheimer" held last year.
The king and queen, who were accompanied by the Spanish Foreign Minister, Abel Matutes, were received by the rector of the UIB,
Llorenç Huguet, the president of the Balearic Government, Frances Antich, and the central Government delegate, Catalina Cirer.
The rector of the UIB, Llorenç Huguet, gave a short
speech in Catalan in which he went over the history of the institution and thanked
the presence of the Monarchs.
King Juan Carlos showed his interest for the extension works and for the
Campus Extens, and spoke on a videoconference with the
president of the Menorcan Council, Joana Barceló, and of the Ibizan Council, Pilar Costa, who were in the university extensions that
the UIB maintains with the two islands.
During the day, a group of students protested about the visit, contrasting with the general applause that the university community
dedicated to the king and queen.
