The Council for Environment of the Balearic Government has identified in the Balearics 85 rubbish tips, 456 contaminated places and
861 potentially contaminated points. The Inventary, carried out by the firm
Idom Ingeniería y Consultoría, SA, has the objective of
identifying those places that present signs of possible changes in the levels of the natural quality of the earth. This Inventary is
formed as a computer data base to facilitate a regular update, but above all to be a starting point to be informed about the real limits
of contamination in the Balearic land, to start its restoration and to avoid future tips.
The Council of Environment has included in its budget for 2000 a section for 130 million pesetas to order the first restoration projects
for contaminated land. At the same time, all the work needed to elaborate a Plan for global waste for all the islands (not just urban,
but also sanitary, mineral oils, tyres, demolishing, dangerous, etc.) which has the objective of doting the Balearics with the
necessary treatment systems to avoid the present -- and traditional -- indiscriminate tips.
